Steps to Earning an Indiana Real Estate License

Already licensed in Illinois? Start here or contact the Indiana Real Estate Commission at 1-317-234-3009. Otherwise, keep reading.

Step #1
Complete and pass a state-approved 90-hour Broker pre-licensing course

May we recommend? The IAR-owned Real Estate Certification Program, or RECP, is a state-approved real estate education provider. RECP offers the Broker pre-licensing course live—in locations around the state—and online/OnDemand. Take it on an instructor’s schedule or your schedule, it’s your choice!

Step #2
Pass the Indiana licensing exam

Register to Take the Exam

Step #3
Affiliate with a Managing Broker

May we recommend? Choose a Managing Broker who is also a REALTOR®. This means your Managing Broker chose to unite with fellow real estate professionals in following a strict, living Code of Ethics and advocating for your new profession. In other words, choose someone who’s taken the extra step.

Step #4
Apply for a Broker license

Download and submit Your application

Step #5
Complete a state-approved 30-hour Broker post-licensing course within 2 years of your license issue date; this course is required and satisfies your initial continuing education (CE) requirement during the first 2 years of licensure

May we recommend? RECP offers the Broker post-licensing course online/OnDemand. We KNOW how busy you’ll be getting your business off the ground, so we offer this course in a format that allows you to fit it in when convenient!

Step #6
Begin a 3-year license renewal period and complete 12 hours of CE each year

Helpful hint: You do NOT need to submit your CE certificates of completion to the Indiana Real Estate Commission each year. Just save those certificates in case of audit.

Step #7
At this point, Brokers may complete a state-approved 24-hour Managing Broker course to hold their own license

May we recommend? RECP offers the Managing Broker course live and online/OnDemand.
